The Courage to Claim "I Am a Writer"

This blog post started life as an email I sent out recently, but I had so much more to say on the topic that I couldn’t resist turning it into a longer article. Consider this the extended, coffee-date version—pull up a chair, and let’s dive in!

Have you ever hesitated to call yourself a writer? Maybe you've doubted your abilities or felt like an imposter among seasoned authors. Today, let’s explore the transformative power of embracing your identity as a writer. Claiming "I am a writer" isn't just a title—it's a declaration of your commitment to your craft and your unique voice.

Embrace Your Identity

Owning the title of "writer" can be a profound shift in mindset. It signals to yourself and the world that your ideas and stories matter. Many aspiring writers grapple with imposter syndrome, feeling that their work isn't good enough or that they lack the necessary skills. Remember, every writer starts somewhere, and the journey is as important as the destination.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome is a common hurdle. It whispers that you're not talented enough or that your work isn't worth sharing. To combat this, focus on the process rather than the outcome. Celebrate small victories—completing a chapter, refining a character, or simply sitting down to write each day. These actions build confidence and reinforce your identity as a writer.

Embrace Your Unique Voice

Your experiences, perspectives, and creativity are unique. Embracing your voice means trusting that your stories resonate because they come from a place only you can access. Don’t shy away from sharing your truth. Authenticity attracts readers and creates meaningful connections.

Take the Leap

The first step is often the hardest. Start by affirming your identity. Say it out loud: "I am a writer." Let this affirmation guide your actions and decisions. Write regularly, seek feedback, and immerse yourself in the writing community. Each step you take solidifies your place as a writer.

“The scariest moment is always just before you start.” Stephen King

Let this quote remind you that courage often comes right before the act of writing. Embrace the fear, and let it fuel your creativity.

In this inspiring talk, Elizabeth Gilbert discusses the pressures of creativity and how to navigate the relationship between the artist and their work. It's a fantastic resource for understanding and nurturing your creative identity.

A Task to Inspire You

Journal Prompt: "I Am a Writer Because..."

Take 10 minutes to write a journal entry starting with, "I am a writer because..." List three reasons why your voice and stories matter. Reflect on what writing means to you and how it shapes your life. This exercise reinforces your identity and clarifies your motivations.

Example:

  1. I am a writer because I want to share stories that inspire others.

  2. I am a writer because my experiences can help others feel less alone.

  3. I am a writer because I believe in the power of words to change the world.

Final Thoughts

Claiming "I am a writer" is a powerful affirmation that sets the foundation for your creative journey. Embrace this identity, trust in your voice, and take courageous steps toward your writing goals. Remember, every great writer started by believing they could write.
